Why Our Youth in Robeson County Need Us Now

In Robeson County, resilience is not just a word—it’s a way of life.

But for many of our youth, survival has become the norm.

Behind the strength of our community are sobering realities:

Nearly 38% of children live in poverty

Many families face food insecurity daily

Access to mental health support is limited

Youth are navigating trauma, instability, and uncertainty far too early in life

These are not just statistics—they are stories.

Stories of children showing up to school hungry.

Stories of teens carrying emotional burdens they don’t have the tools to process.

Stories of potential waiting for opportunity.

The Gap We Can No Longer Ignore

For years, families in Robeson County have done their best with limited resources. Schools, churches, and community members have stepped in—but the need continues to grow.

Youth today are facing:

Increased anxiety and depression

Exposure to violence and instability

Limited access to mentorship and structured programs

Few safe spaces to process what they’re going through

And here’s the truth:

👉 You can’t expect young people to thrive when they’re still trying to survive.

🌻 A Mission Rooted in Purpose

SWA Nonprofit—Steppers With Attitude aka Strength, Wisdom & Achievement—was founded with a vision to support youth in overcoming barriers and building brighter futures.

From the very beginning, the mission has been clear:

To help prevent social problems, increase graduation rates, and expand opportunities for young people.

That mission hasn’t changed.

What has changed… is the urgency.

Today, SWA is expanding its work to meet the deeper needs of our youth by providing:

Trauma-informed support

Youth and teen empowerment programs

Academic and life skills development

Family-centered resources

Access to mental health services through partnerships with Sunflowers Wellness Therapeutic Services PLLC and other mental health organizations.

💛 More Than a Program—A Safe Place

SWA is not just another program.

It is a space where:

A child can feel seen

A teen can feel heard

A family can feel supported

It’s where coping skills are taught, confidence is built, and hope is restored.

It’s where we help youth understand:

✨ You are more than what you’ve been through.

At the heart of this work is a simple but powerful belief:

Growth takes time.

Healing takes support.

And every young person deserves both.

Through intentional programming and community collaboration, SWA is helping youth

slowly, safely turning toward healing, growth, and possibility.

🤝 How You Can Be Part of the Change

This work cannot be done alone.

You can support SWA by:

Donating to support youth programming

Partnering with us as a community organization

Volunteering your time or expertise

Referring youth and families in need

Because when we invest in our youth…

we invest in the future of Robeson County.

The Bottom Line

Our youth are not broken.

They are navigating systems and circumstances that were never designed for them to thrive.

But with the right support—

the right guidance—

the right community—

They won’t just survive.

They will rise.
